Many cyber-attacks are launched through emails which appear to be legitimate. Here are a few tips for avoiding these attacks:

Be wary of links and attachments in your emails. Read everything carefully, and avoid messages from strangers.

Even if you recognize the sender, make sure to scan the content of the email. If you have any doubts, contact the sender before opening it.

The IRS does not contact taxpayers by email, text message, or social media to request personal or financial information. If you receive any communications through one of these channels, the IRS advises reporting the incident by emailing phishing@irs.gov
